The Calendar and the Trinity

Trinity Sunday alerts us to the fact that the church year doesn’t simply commemorate historical events. It marks out God’s unfolding self-revelation.

All through the church year, our feasts and celebrations disclose the mystery of the Trinity, the God who is eternally Father, Son, and Spirit.

From Advent to Easter, we come to know the Father who so loves the world that He sends His Son into the world to be born, grow, live, die, and rise again.

At Ascension, we learn of the Father gives His Son, the God-Man, the throne at His right hand, to rule the nations.

Pentecost completes the portrait, showing us the Father who gives the Spirit to the Son, so the Son might pour the fullness of His Spirit on His disciples.

By the time we get to Trinity Sunday, we’ve met the God who both sends and is sent, the God who gives Himself, the God whose very life is giving and receiving and giving again.

The church calendar isn’t just for remembering events of the distant past. It’s a present encounter with the Triune God, the one living God who is an eternal communion of love.
